Tears for Tuscaloosa

April 29, 2011

I sent this reflection to my seminary, but I want others to read it:

I serve as priest in a part of Birmingham that was not hit directly by the storm, and with power out in our neighborhood we were spared many of the images watched in “real time” across the nation. I will never forget sitting  in the dark, using an old rotary phone (the only one that would work with cell service interrupted) and talking with my son-- a freshman college student in Tuscaloosa who assured me that he and his friends were safe.   That next morning our neighborhood was covered with sad reminders of what just happened; there were pieces of insulation and roof tiles and glass and boards all over the place. One woman from the church found a letter from Tuscaloosa in her garden. On the radio I heard of a person in another town 100 miles to our east (and 200 miles from Tuscaloosa) finding cups from a fast food restaurant that was a favorite haunt of my son’s.  This was a debris field of incredible proportions. These were tears from Tuscaloosa. This Sunday I’m going to hold a piece of siding that I found in my front yard as I lead the congregation in prayer for healing, restoration, comfort, and protection for all emergency personnel.
