Vacation Bible School is open to children who will be 4 years old by September 1, 2012 through those who have completed fifth grade by May, 2012. The cost is $15.00. If your child will not be four by September 1, 2012 there will be a modified version of VBS for them if their parent(s) volunteers at least two days of the week. Please still register them online. The cost is $15.00.

Babies & Toddlers are invited to join us on the days their parent volunteers and are free. They also need to be registered online. COURSE DESCIPTION:

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a formation method for children ages 3-12 years old that is based on the belief that young children are eager and ready for a relationship with God. The work of the Catechesis is done in a specially prepared room called an Atrium. Materials and lessons are carefully selected and created based on the developmental readiness of each age group. Children use hands on materials to explore scripture and liturgy which aid them in reflecting abstractly on spiritual questions.  Together children and adults reflect on the great mysteries of the Christian faith.

This course focuses on the Level 1 Atrium which is the foundational level of Catechesis. Level 1 Atrium is meant for children, ages 3-6. During this course, participants will study the cognitive and developmental needs of the 3-6 year old child along with origins and methods of Catechesis. A great deal of time will be spent reflecting on scripture and liturgy as adults, which will aid catechists when they are working with children in an Atrium. At the end of this course, participants will receive their catechist certification.

No prior knowledge is needed to begin this training. Catechesis has proven to be a valuable formation method for adults as well as children!

All participants must complete a registration form. Please indicate if you will require childcare. Tuition for the course is $250/semester which includes the certification fee. In many cases, churches may sponsor and therefore pay for their members to complete a course.

All women of the church are invited to our ECW EVENING meeting beginning at 6:30 pm (evening!) on Monday, May 7. We will have refreshments and appetizers, followed by a demonstration of shag dancing by Mountain Brook residents Sally and John Harper, Carolina Shag instructors. The Harpers have taught shag lessons at both Mountain Brook Community Education and Jewish Community Center.  Come for this fun and light-hearted evening—and ready to dance! Childcare is available.

Come this Sunday to hear Father Joel Atong from the village of Ngunya  in Kenya. Currently a student at Virginia Theological Seminary studying for his second Master’s Degree, Father Joel will tell us about Ngunya Community Healthcare and Resource Centre, an initiative to help the people of Ngunya overcome the many socio-economic challenges perennially afflicting the community. Most of the people in Ngunya have an elementary-level education and live on less than $1 per day.  Like many parts of Africa, Joel’s village has been ravaged by HIV/AIDS and malaria. Their nearest medical facility is a fourteen-mile roundtrip walk or bike ride (most villagers do not own a car). Father Joel and his Bishop have a plan to build a simple health care clinic in Ngunya to dispense medication and provide health education.  Father Joel says, “Just as building the church has healed souls here, we need also to heal bodies.” He also will assist at the altar at the 10:30 am service. Our loose plate offering collected this Sunday will go to the Ngunya Community Healthcare and Resource Centre.

Please note: The Thinking Anglican class will not meet this Sunday, so all can hear Father Joel’s presentation.

We have planned a fun event for our final EYC outing.  We will head to the new Red Mountain Park “Red Ore Zip Tour” for an afternoon of high-flying zipline fun.  The cost will be $40, and everyone interested will need to sign up in advance. 

Availability is limited, so sign up early.  We have prepurchased 12 slots, but there is still availability for us to reserve more.  So, the first 12 are gauranteed a place, and we'll make more reservations as our numbers exceed 12.  So, please sign up as early as possible.

Our first group of 6 is signed up to start at 2:00 with our second group starting at 2:30.  We will meet at the church at 1:15pm so that we are sure to arrive on time.

We will enjoy dinner at the church after the zip tour adventure.

Becoming Like Children-Seeing God With The Eyes of A Child

Join us for a wonderful talk given by Stephanie Diethelm, Children’s Formation Leader, All Saints Episcopal Church. Stephanie is a catechist and formation leader for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. She is trained in all 3 levels and works with children ages 3-12. She will discuss the child’s capacity for relationship with God along with the methods used for encouraging this relationship through Catechesis.

Beverley Hoyt, Director of Children’s Christian Formation, St. Mary’s-on- the- Highlands, and Katie Robinson, Lead Catechist, St. Luke’s, also will be present to offer their experiences working alongside children in an Atrium.

This should be an informative talk for anyone interested in learning more about the Catechesis program. It will also be a great time to remember how to look upon Christ and the mystery of creation with childlike eyes.   

Don’t miss this opportunity to find out what we can learn from children by listening to God with them!

Children through 3rd grade are invited to bring their Easter baskets and join us Saturday April 7th by the new playground at 10:00 a.m. for an Easter Egg Hunt.

Older children (4th grade and up) are invited to join us at 9:30 to help us hide eggs and to stay and help the children hunt for eggs.

Spring Cleaning?

Friday, May 4 is our 55th Place Spring Ingathering. All you need to do is gather your items and drive to the church. Volunteers will be stationed at the porte-cochere to help remove donation items from your car between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. We will accept used household items, linens, small appliances, small furniture, kitchen items, clothing, and more. If you are not able to bring your donations to the church, please call Emmy McGowin (324-1629) to see if she can arrange for someone to pick up your items.

55th Place Thrift Store is a non-profit all volunteer organization. All merchandise is donated, and profits are given to back to the needy in the Woodlawn community.

In Defense of the Resurrection—Beyond a Reasonable Doubt and to a Moral Certainty. Presented by Warren Lightfoot

Using the significant legal ability that has made him an outstandingly successful courtroom attorney, Mr. Lightfoot manages, in his presentation, to bring to 21st century skeptics proof of the Resurrection, almost as compelling as the visible wounds were to the original Doubting Thomas.  In addition, the presentation is illustrated with a collection of important works of art associated with the Resurrection (including the work titled The Empty Tomb, by Dirk Walker which hangs behind the reception desk in Claypool Commons) demonstrating Warren’s life-long love of art and a gift for drawing which he has now, in retirement, expanded into a career as a sculptor.  It is a convincing and utterly enjoyable presentation - you will be glad you came!

PreSchool Partners is hosting a Food Truck Round Up in Mountain Brook Village—2816 Culver Road in the back parking lot behind the Mountain Brook Mall and Leaf ‘n Petal. We’ve recruited the hottest food trucks in the city like Shindigs, Cantina on Wheels, the Dreamcakes Cupcake Truck, Spoonfed Grill, the Ice Cream Man, Ezelle’s Catfish Cabin, Johnny Ray’s BBQ and Sneaky Pete’s to offer a sampling of their menus in support of a good cause.  Supreme Beverage and Good People Brewery will be serving ice cold beer and a bounce house and balloon-shaping clown will be providing kid-friendly entertainment.  Plus, live music by The Drennen Brothers. The day is shaping up to be a fun, festive family event you won’t want to miss!

Once again we will offer a six-week support group experience for interested adults who may be struggling with an experience of personal loss. Coping with grief can be an overwhelming and even debilitating experience. Many in our church family have found that the journey toward healing can begin within a caring and supportive group where each participant is encouraged to share his or her journey and learn from the experiences of others. The group will be facilitated by Fr. Steve DeGweck and Mrs. Betsy Smith, one of our Stephen Ministry leaders. The group sessions will begin Monday, April 16 at 4:00 pm in the Tilson Room and continue weekly through May 21. Each session will last no longer than 90 minutes.

Each week the group will focus on a different theme or aspect of the grief experience. Members will be encouraged (not required) to share their experiences and insights within a safe, supportive, and prayerful fellowship. We will require a minimum of five (5) participants in order to offer the group, and registration will be capped at twelve (12) persons. Non-Saint Luke’s members are welcome to attend. No additional participants will be admitted after the first session, so be sure to be present on the 16th.

For the victims of the 2011 Alabama April Tornadoes
Dedication of the Saint Luke’s Donated Disaster Response Trailer

This Sunday we will gather at noon by the outdoor pavilion (near the playground side of the back parking lot) for a special service of remembrance for the victims of the tornadoes that swept through Alabama on April 27, 2011. The service will begin with a welcome from our Rector, followed by remarks from Charles T. Moore, President and CEO of Greater Birmingham Habitat for Humanity and Drew Langloh, President and CEO of United Way of Central Alabama. We will then bless the Saint Luke’s donated disaster response trailer. The program will close with prayers for the storm victims and their families. During the prayers, we will begin the tolling of the bells—once for each person who died as a result of the tornadoes. In addition to the speakers, other representatives will be present from Habitat, United Way, and Hands-On Birmingham.

Shortly after the 2011 tornadoes, Saint Luke’s responded by providing volunteers and emergency supplies to areas that had experienced mass devastation. We also set up a Tornado Relief Fund to which many of you generously contributed. Much of the monies from the Fund were dispersed to meet immediate needs around Birmingham. However, after meeting with local response organizations and emergency personnel, our Outreach Committee realized that due to the extent of the wreckage, monies also needed to be set aside to help with the necessary rebuilding that would take place in the coming years. Our goal was to find a tangible means to respond more effectively in future emergencies and also help with the ongoing long-term rebuilding efforts. We discovered that other Alabama counties had response trailers, but Jefferson County did not have one. After conversation with United Way and Habitat for Humanity, Saint Luke’s decided to purchase an disaster response trailer to be used by Habitat for Humanity, both in emergency situations and to assist in long-term rebuilding of local communities. The trailer is equipped with chain-saws, emergency supplies, and other construction equipment.

The purchase of the trailer dovetails perfectly with the response theme Saint Luke’s adopted last April: Empower, Equip, Engage. In a very practical way, we believe the trailer will be a means of healing to our neighbors in the devastated communities. In partnership with United Way, Habitat, and other outreach organizations, we will help those in need rebuild their homes, their businesses, their communities—their lives.

Presenting Deborah Stone
Monday, April 2 • Courtyard (off of Claypool Commons)

Deborah Stone, founder of Stone Hollow Farmstead, will be with us to speak about farming, gardening and much more.  You may know Deborah from her days as a spa owner, Deborah Stone Day Spa. Since selling her spa in 1999, she has gone back to her roots with the purchase of their family farm in Harpersville. Here she produces fine cheeses, honey, specialty foods, botanicals, cosmetic extracts and cosmeceuticals. Join her in the church courtyard at 11:30 am as she shares her story of the farm life. A luncheon will follow.  Come at 11:15 and enjoy fellowship before the program.

On Sunday morning, May 6 at the 10:30 a.m. service, our Saint Luke’s Parish Choir will sing Mozart’s Missa Brevis in B-flat major, K. 275. The Mass setting was composed in Salzburg in 1777, 235 years ago.

The choir and soloists will be accompanied by a string orchestra and organ.

Spring FORWARD This Sunday!

We begin daylight savings time early this year. Remember to set your clocks one hour AHEAD before retiring Saturday evening, March 10. We don’t want you to be late for church. This also is a good time to replace the batteries in your smoke alarm.

We want our parishioners to be prompt and safe!

Meet Jerry Desmond from the Birmingham History Center. He will tell us about the museum, bring some artifacts from the museum, and share some Birmingham history. Lunch will be served after his presentation. We need luncheon reservations by noon on Friday, March 23. J.U.L.I.E.T.S -Just Us Ladies Into Eating Together- is for ladies who would like a fellowship group that goes out to lunch quarterly. The Great Vigil of Easter

This most ancient of Christian liturgies begins with the kindling of fire, the carrying of a single candle into the darkened church  and the spreading of light to individual candles, the singing of the Exsultet, the reading of prophecies, baptism, and the renewal of our own baptismal vows, and the dramatic lighting of  the church including organ fanfare, bells, Great Alleluias, and The First Eucharist of Easter. 

No childcare for this service.

Those who choose not to walk may remain seated and sip lemonade. Following the program, we will enjoy an outdoor luncheon.

Get Ready for Vacation Bible School 2012! The theme this year is Amazing Wonders Aviation: Encountering God’s Awesome Power. Watch amazing things happen as kids tour some of the world’s most marvelous natural wonders and learn to trust and recognize God as they explore His awesome power!  

You all know the old African Proverb, "It takes a Village to Raise a Child."...well that couldn't be truer about Vacation Bible School!

Did you know that it takes approximately 100 people to run an extraordinary Vacation Bible School at Saint Luke's? Where would you like to help?

Mark your calendars for a VBS informational day, Sunday, February 12. There will be a table in the Commons before and after morning services where Emily and Katie can answer your questions about what volunteer roles are available and help you find a place of service. Please find a few minutes that morning to stop by and speak with us about serving at this year's VBS.

We welcome volunteers of all ages. You do NOT have to have young children to be a VBS volunteer!

“Be still and know that I am God”

“Be still and know that I am God” . . . is one of the most difficult invitations in the Bible for most of us.  Our Culture and very natures are so invested in Doing and Achieving and Knowing…. How do we possibly find ways to observe “a Holy Lent” as our prayer Book instructs? For centuries, many Christians have found the practice of “Walking the Labyrinth” to be a simple and wonderful way to have a more “active” yet very contemplative meditation.  There are no secrets or instructions or rules, it is purely an experience which many find a blessing.  A path for mindfulness, or awareness, or respite, or prayer, each “pilgrim” brings different needs and expectations and has a different experience.

Saint Luke’s will have a Labyrinth set up in Graham Hall as a Lenten opportunity on Friday March 2nd from noon to 2:00 pm and Saturday  March 3rd from 9:00 to noon.  Everyone (of all ages) is welcome to come walk the path into and back out of the ancient shape on the floor. We are blessed to have this tool to share with one another at Saint Luke’s. Here each of us has the chance for a small journey into our own spiritual relationship for the short time we are on the Labyrinth.  Who knows, maybe it will be the beginning of a new pilgrimage for each of us!

Last week we had an urgent request from The American Red Cross; currently, there is a critical need for blood in our area. The Red Cross will have one mobile unit in our back parking lot this Sunday. Please consider giving blood. To avoid waiting in a long line, you may schedule a time slot by calling Carol Pearce, our parish nurse, at 427-8166

We need your help in two ways:

1) 200 VOLUNTEERS FOR 2 DAYS! On Wednesday, February 15 and Thursday, February 16 volunteers will package meals at Canterbury Methodist, from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm. Saint Luke’s has committed to providing 200 volunteers. To sign up, click HERE or email ellen.thomas@canterburyumc.org

2) MAKE A DONATION: Saint Luke's has committed to providing $12,500 for Stop Hunger Now during the months of January and February. During December our children collected quarters and raised $500 for the project. Here are suggested giving levels. We hope everyone will give to this important community project!

$25 provides a hundred meals, over 4 months of meals for one child

$50 means a week of meals for a classroom full of children

$75 is a year’s worth of meals for a child

$100 means two weeks of meals for a classroom

$200 provides meals for a classroom for one month

$500 will stop a lot of hunger for a long while

Stop Hunger Now’s meal packaging program provides volunteers the opportunity to package dehydrated, high protein, and highly nutritious meals that are used in crisis situations and in school feeding programs for schools and orphanages in developing countries around the world.

Saint Luke's is partnering with four other churches (St. Stephen’s Episcopal, Canterbury United Methodist, Vestavia Hills United Methodist, and Brookwood Baptist) to package and distribute 500,000 meals to be distributed to school children in lesser developed countries.

Holy Meets Ordinary -Room 212

Sandy Porter will facilitate a discussion of some of the themes in her book Holy Meets Ordinary. Each week will focus on a different topic based on a reflection from the book and related scriptures. This group will meet for six weeks, beginning Wednesday, January 18.

Freedom in Christ

Marjorie Jones has been an EFM mentor, Stephen Minister, and founded the GED program at St. Mary’s on-the Highlands Episcopal Church. She is a native of Montgomery and is married to Birmingham attorney Alex Jones. His dream was to live on the Little Cahaba River, and hers was to share her faith and love of God’s word. They moved to the river last year and have invited us to their home for a retreat of small group fellowship and teaching on “Freedom in Christ.” If the weather permits, we will walk to the river, so wear comfortable shoes. Lunch will be provided for $10 per person. Please email Jennifer Boylan (ladyj331@aol.com) to let her know you are coming, so we can plan for lunch.

Annual Day of Community Service
Volunteer on Monday, January 16
9:00 am to 4:00 pm
(work all day or a half-day shift)

The annual national day of community service for the MLK holiday is scheduled for Monday, January 16. This year’s local inter-faith event is sponsored by Hands On Birmingham. It will be at AG Gaston Boys and Girls Club (2900 South Park Drive, SW, 35211), Birmingham’s oldest Boys and Girls Club. It is a family friendly event for children and adults of all ages. Work to be done includes:
-    Staff the Lighthouse “bounce house” – (children from two A.G. Gaston clubs will be there.)
-    Raking leaves
-    Painting indoor classrooms and a hallway
-    Deep cleaning of the kitchen
-    Construction of a ground-level deck
-    Filling pot holes in the gravel parking lot
-    Other kid-friendly work projects
