The STAIR Program which has begun at Norwood Elementary is off to a great start! Volunteers from Saint Luke’s and from the Norwood community are busy helping second graders improve their reading skills. New relationships are forming as the students and their tutors meet week by week and work according to the STAIR curriculum. The children receive a healthy snack and then spend an hour with their tutors. The current tutors from Saint Luke’s are: Anne Greaves, Diane Mills, Helen Camp, Henry Emack, Ogden Deaton, Ann Johnson, Sarah Creveling, Jeannette Watford, Margaret Sullivan, Harris Waggoner, Sarha Hayden Logan, and our own Rich Webster! Substitute tutors are: Lynn Ault, Patsy Dreher, Mel Salem, Blevins Naff, Betsy Smith, Carey Hinds, and Francie Deaton.

If you are interested in joining this exciting ministry, please let us know. We also need help providing and coordinating snacks for the children. If you would like to join a committee to help with snacks, please call Jeannette Watford at 871-8496. The number of children we can reach is only limited by the number of tutors.

When you pull up to Norwood Elementary school for an afternoon of tutoring and see the Preschool Partners bus dropping off children, you see the fruits of all that Saint Luke’s is involved in the Norwood community!

Another new program beginning at the Resource Center is called the Homework Club. This program is a free member’s only club that is especially designed to help students complete homework assignments. This is not a tutoring program but provides help and supervision for homework assignments in a relaxed environment. There will also be fun games that encourage learning and a healty snack provided. This program opens the door for other opportunities to reach out to the school age children of Norwood. This program could use some volunteer “coaches” to help supervise the after school activities. It would be a good volunteer opportunity for high school students who might be able to donate one afternoon every week or two. Call Betsy Smith for more information at 322-7056.

We are excited about these new programs. Along with PreSchool Partners, these programs help us to reach the children and their families in the Norwood community. The Norwood Resource Center and the community is grateful to Saint Luke’s for being a “Founding Partner” in this endeavor of “Neighbors helping Neighbors”.
