Saint Luke's Stories
Village to Village
July 20, 2011

Every Sunday during the Prayers of the People we pray for Brad Jenkins, one of our missionaries who serves in the Haitian village of Lo Choco. The Jenkins have made major strides in sharing the Gospel and improving the way of life for the people in that village. They have built a Chapel, provided water filters, conducted English as a second language classes (ESL), to name a few things. The Jenkins will return soon to the United States, but before leaving Lo Choco, they would love to provide a lasting gift for their Hatian friends —they want to see running water and power in the village.
They can run water from the foot of the hill, at the street, to the Chapel and provide at a spigot there for roughly $450.00. They can also provide a community shower with separate stalls for $1400.00. This pipe will alleviate the need to go down to the river — about 700 meters away and and on steep terrain. The community has been provided water filters for drinking water and will be able to fill their potable water needs right there at their Church. Regarding power, the “government” power is usually available at least three hours per day and was not available in the area until recently. The villagers are quite creative with batteries and converters to help light their huts at night. This costs $450.00 for the transformer and $500.00 for the wire needed to run to the village. The total cost is about $3,000.
During their mission trip to the Dominican Republic next week our youth will travel to Lo Choco and visit with the Jenkins. This past week some of the parents of our youth heard about the Jenkins’ dream and challenged some of their fellow Saint Lukers and friends to raise the funds to meet these needs. Within a few days, this money was raised. Upon their arrival in Haiti, our youth mission team will have wonderful news to share with the Jenkins and their friends in Lo Choco!
